  1. Laughing With!

First, I'd like to say that I'm a big fan of Regina. I really love her voice and her unconventional songwriting. Second, I even like the song "Laughing With," despite being an atheist. Some people in this thread have said that the song is not really about atheists. Maybe it isn't. But in my experience, most people who hear the song do think that it's a variation on the old "no atheists in foxholes" argument. So regardless of whatever subtle twist of meaning or clever interpretation some people might attribute to the song, the fact that most people take it to mean "no atheists in foxholes" must be addressed. So, as an atheist, here's my two cents: No one laughs at God in a hospital. No one laughs at God in a war. No one's laughing at God when they're starving or freezing or so very poor. No one laughs at God when the doctor calls after some routine tests. No one's laughing at God when it's gotten real late and their kid's not back from the party yet. No one laughs at God when their airplane starts to uncontrollably shake. No one's laughing at God when they see the one they love hand in hand with someone else and they hope that they're mistaken. No one laughs at God when the cops knock on their door and they say we got some bad news, sir. No one's laughing at God when there's a famine or fire or flood. No one's laughing at God when they've lost all they've got and they don't know what for. No one laughs at God on the day they realize hat the last sight they'll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes. No one's laughing at God when they're saying their goodbyes. Well, no one is laughing at all, in those situations! If the cops knock on my door and say "we got some bad news, sir," I'm not laughing at anything at that moment! Would I laugh at a God-themed joke when my plane is going down? Probably not. Would I laugh at any joke when my plane is going down? Probably not. So the point is moot. It's completely illogical to imply that just because I'm not laughing at "God" during a crisis moment it means that I believe in God. And for the record, there are atheists in foxholes. There are several clubs/organizations of atheist veterans and atheist active-duty military personnel. You can look them up.
