  1. Recommend a book here...

cool! I like this topic. at the moment, I'm reading 'hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world' by haruki murakmi. I'm getting into it, but it's reminding me a bit of the matrix which, isn't so good. I just finished a load of great books - in cold blood by truman capote, the big sleep by raymond chandler, persepolis by marjane satrapi, introducing stephen hawking by j.p. mcevoy (trying to branch out). this year is going very well book-wise.
  2. Major Rants

general motors have just filed for bankruptcy! that's pretty bad news, it'll hit a lot of people in america hard in barack obama can't pull them out of this fix. hopefully he can. in other bad news, well, that's about it. good! that's good news!
  3. What are you listening to right now?

django reinhardt - manoir de mes reves. something of my dreams? I don't know what manoir means, but it sounds lovely.
  4. Good News Thread!

my good news is that coming back and visiting this forum and reading posts from when I was fourteen made me really happy. I'm nineteen in exactly a week, and I don't think I've really changed. Still loving Regina, too.
  5. Finding Regina Sooner

I started listening to her mid-04, joined the 'stix in late 04 (when it was beeyoutiful teal colour) and saw her first in Jan 05 (missed her in December due to being 14 ) If I had got into her now, I probably would have never gone to see her (gigs too big and expensive) and would have missed out on some of the best gigs of my life. Also, she is being played on sofa ads and boring backgroung music on telly now.
  6. Purists

Yes, it's just disappointing to me that Regina has chosen to react the way she has.
  7. Purists

It pisses me off that people seem to think that if you don't like Begin to Hope that you're a boring purist who doesn't understand or appreciate musicians' changing styles. I just don't like the album. I didn't realise that when I bought Soviet Kitsch I had been bound to rave about every single one of Regina's further releases. I don't think that deserves a "fuck off" from anyone.
  8. i find it sad

I love this forum. I don't check it as often as I should, but it's not really that active. Still, it's got by far the loveliest members - we seem to attract lots of really nice new members too (although we've lost some on the way, anyone seen lambchop recently? Me neither ). I wouldn't care if it never changed. If it became more active, great. If not, that's all right too. Side note: Hoi! I was in Amsterdam last week. I had to have the Holland/Nederlands thing explained to me whilst I was there by an exacerbated native.
  9. Meet the British Regina

  10. What are you listening to right now?

Foundations - Kate Nash "You said that I must eat so many lemons, 'cause I am so bitter. I said I'd rather be with your friends, dear, 'cause they are so much fittaaa!"
  11. what is with the new sound?!

quote: Originally posted by Beechcraft Bonanza: Well, you should realise that an artist has a mind of her/his own, and a good artist will not limit him/herself to do what his/her "fans" expect her to do, or want her to do. You should not think your musical heroes have exactly the same tastes as you in music, and WILL go in a slightly different direction when they feel like it, even if it might alienate some of their more single-minded fans. Okay, a fan might thus not like the direction an artist has taken, but complaining about it will not change the record, nor will it change the artist's direction, that's her choice (I've never heard of a band who re-directed back to the old road when they'd just turned a corner to a new one just because some fans complained). If you don't like it, DON'T buy the album and stay away from the concerts, you'll only get upset. Don't patronise me, I'm fully aware that Regina has mandate to do whatever she wants with her music. Her style has changed several times already over the years I've been a fan of years and up until BTH, I've loved all of her experimentation. I don't like this one, apparently this makes me a narrow minded person, a single-minded "fan" (BTW, these snarky little comments are very tacky and don't endear you at all) quote: @ kiwifruit: Sounds like everything else? huh? I've heard a lot of "everything else" and "everything else" Begin to Hope is not. It might be so that BTH is less of an "acquired taste" than the previous work, that's true. But, come on! I say, it's not like she turned into a second Norah Jones is it? Regina being Mainstream? that's just odd. I can't see the mainstreamness in songs like Edit, Après Moi, Twenty Years of Snow and That Time. And then, Mainstream is so popular even underground artists take influences from there to use/mangle/twist/distort/improve in their own material. Well, I happen to like Norah Jones, I think an obvious talent and warmth comes through in her music. Moreso than that, there is an element of personality. I don't hear much personality in Begin to Hope, the songs are great of course, but all of their character has been varnished over in favour of something more radio friendly. That is, in my opinion, the very definition of an "everything else" musician. The album, Begin to Hope, as a whole, I find mainstream. It appeals to the majority, of course, this is not necessarily a bad thing, like I said, I like Norah Jones, sometimes the 'majority' can have pretty good taste. My problem is when the "mainstream" becomes the banal. And I don't care if you disagree with that, if you love the album then great for you, what I DO have a problem with is you insulting people and making assumptions about them just because their opinion differs from yours.
  12. What are you listening to right now?

Freddie and the Dreamers - You Were Made For Me
  13. Regina on VBS.tv

As you may be aware, Vice magazine has its own little television channel called VBS, which has its own little feature called "Practise Space". It's basically films of bands..practising. Yeah, and Regina was on it! Anyway, here it is, enjoy! http://www.vbs.tv/player.php?bctid=756513513&bccl=Mjg0OTQ3NzE4X19NVVNJQw==

If you don't like these songs then that's OK and you can say that (everyone has a right to express their opinion, positive or negative), but not liking an album because it sounds too commercial is just dumb.. Why is that "dumb"? I don't like her commericial sound because I think it sounds like kareoke. Because I think that the slick prodution detracts from the soul of the song. Because it sounds like everything else. Yeah, I dislike it because it's too commercial now, it's not special anymore. I don't think that's a "dumb" reason, it's perfectly valid.
