  1. Radial Nerve Palsy

For those not up on their mammalian anatomy, the radial nerve is a nerve that runs through the arm and into the wrist and thumb. Palsy is, of course, the loss of the ability to control a certain part of the body. Well, early Sunday morning I developed spontaneous radial nerve palsy in my left hand. It's not a complete loss of control, as I can still do things like make a fist, but I can't move my wrist beyond the neutral position and I can't really do anything with my fingers other than make a fist. I went to the ER, but all they could do for me was set up an appointment for an MRI (tomorrow) and give me a splint so I don't accidentally break my wrist or something. This is particularly crappy for me, as I'm a computer scientist and most of my time at work is spent typing. Needless to say, my productivity has been down the last few days. Hopefully the MRI will reveal the problem and they'll be able to fix it... or maybe it will just heal on its own as quickly as it appeared. I'm not counting on it though, as most sources seem to indicate it generally takes months to make a full recovery. Joy

No, there's not actually a difference, but she won the vinyl version in my give-away and we were already baking an inside joke so I figured it didn't hurt to throw another layer on top of the cake. I guess we can stop with that now and get back to serious discussion.

Having to wear the splint has been annoying, and I've got a couples sore spots and the usual, but I've also gotten a few neat scribblings that make me happy Jack Dishel came up with this after I told him he could write "anything he wants" after his set at The Rock Shop: And then Nicole Atkins misspelled this continuation of the theme after her set at The Glasslands Gallery: So I can at least get a little smile when I look at it I'm thinking maybe Regina and Jenny can write on the straps? I don't know, any ideas?
  6. I just got back from a show with Jack and Nicole, and Jack says he has no idea how this show, with so many artists, is going to work, or any idea what the format will be. All he knew he could say was that it was going to be a pretty sad mood.

  8. Somehow we don't have a thread for this one yet, so to move the discussion out of the 'Show Calendar' thread, here ye be: Official Description: A Tribute Concert for Daniel Cho: Artists gather to honor a brilliant musician and to help support his family. Participating Artists: Regina Spektor Carina Round Cooper Jenny Owen Youngs Jupiter One Only Son Rachel Platten The Candles Tracy Bonham Wes Hutchinson So, the usual stuff -- who's coming (I am!), who's recording (I am!), who's got a cool new stealth hd video camera (I don't!), who wants to come really badly but can't because their life sucks (I'm really sorry!)? Input on the 'lesser known' artists by stixers who've seen them would also be widely appreciated, I'm sure.
  9. Show Calendar

Hooray, 4 tickets acquired to the Dan Cho Tribute Show... GA though
  10. Show Calendar

Wow that's quite a list, should be excellent. I wonder if the tickets are going to be GA or not... if they are, I'm wondering if I should cash in my "Jenny will put me on the guest list" favor to get in earlier... either way this is going to be an amazing show.
  11. Radial Nerve Palsy

Thanks everyone, this should be a good weekend: My grandfather gets to come home from the hospital and I get to see Jack in Brooklyn!

quote: Originally posted by Sgtcampsalot: Sorry, Aaorn. For what it's worth, I can relate on SOME level. For the past year I've had a muscular issue with both arms that my orthopedic surgeon can not identify at all. Basically the muscles extending from my tendons (in both parts of both arms) are dangerously constricted, possibly permanently, causing severe pain whenever I do anything with my arms. At all. I'm in physical therapy but may have to go to a rheumatologist for months of tests. This sucks, too, because I do meteorology which requires tons of writing of equations and using computers for computer models. So I've basically put my academic career and most computer recreation on hold this semester until I figure this out. Yours sounds even worse since it's an actual serious condition, but man I believe it sucks. Stay positive. I'd say yours is definitely worse than mine. Thanks to a cancellation, I got to have my EMG today, and the neurologist said it's a "stretch" injury, so it will heal on its own, it will just take time. It's already visibly better than last week, and I still don't really have any pain, except soreness from typing (using different muscles and whatnot). Also my grandfather's bypass went extremely well, and he'll be out of the hospital by the end of the week, so everything is looking up in eshbach land.

Very neat, I can't wait to find out where she'll be performing...
  14. Radial Nerve Palsy

Well, this is not a good week for my family. Today my one remaining Grandfather had a fairly severe heart attack and is currently in the ICU awaiting a quadruple bypass.

I can (almost) straighten my wrist and (again, almost) extend my fingers, though not at the same time, and I can hit a few keys on the left side of the keyboard again.
  16. Radial Nerve Palsy

Well, today's tests didn't reveal any new information, so now I'm scheduled for an EMG. Sadly, the earliest they could get me in for that was the 7th of September, so I'm stuck like this for at least a couple more weeks. @Anthony - I was completely fine until I woke up and simply couldn't move my hand. I'm 24 and haven't really had any health issues until now. Thanks for the kind wishes everyone, I appreciate the sentiment.

Sure, the first couple of weekends sucked because everyone went home or whatever, but that just means you'll have to venture even farther outside your comfort zone to find things to do, and those are often the best experiences.

It's a Stipplicon CD that Regina did some piano and vocals for. Produced in 1999 at Purchase http://cgi.ebay.com/STIPPLICON...3207321?pt=Music_CDs I wish I had the money to buy it right now.. I have that CD (and their second one), and despite many repeated listens, I haven't discerned any Regina vocals. Piano perhaps.
  20. Fellow Brumstixers, As I’m sure you are aware, Dan Cho passed away one week ago today. As cellist in Regina’s latest band, Dan’s gifted musicianship was an invaluable part of all of our lives, and his loss is among the greatest this community has ever encountered. In order to express our condolences to the family and friends of Dan, Jamie and I have elected to send a floral arrangement on behalf of the entire Brumstix community. As card space is very limited, no individual names will be listed, but we may be open to the possibility of adding a line of poetry or a brief song lyric to the card. We have looked over the variety of arrangements available and have narrowed it down to two, about which we would like the community to make the final decision. Pictures of the arrangements are included at the bottom of this post. Please use this poll to vote as soon as possible, as the flowers must be sent tomorrow. Please also use this thread to let us know if you have any suggestions for what to put on the card, or any objections about sending flowers from the community. Thank you all very much for your input, and for being a part of this wonderful community. Celebration of Life Ocean Breeze

Who the fuck are you people and how the hell do you just happen to find yourselves in Reg's presence? and my next question is can you teach me to be this cool? I had consulted with Jack about sending flowers prior to even starting this thread, and when I first got to Sidewalk he asked me what we ended up sending. I wasn't really expecting Regina to be there, since she wasn't at Jack's last show at Sidewalk, but she has been seen at other shows of his, so I knew it was a possibility. After his set, I guess he told her about the conversation we had earlier, and that prompted Regina to come over to us. She really seemed genuinely thankful for everyone's compassion, and I just told her I'd be sure to tell Brumstix.

  23. Urgent: Flower Arrangement for Dan

I have an update for everyone direct from Regina herself. I was at the Sidewalk Cafe last night to see Jack's set during the Antifolk fetstival, and Regina came in just before Jack started playing. I had been sitting right next to Jack in the back of the room, but Regina took a seat right up front Anyway, after Jack's set I said hello to Regina and she introduced me to her cousin and then I went back to sit Kate and Rawin who were also there. A few minutes later, Regina came back to us and said "Jack tells me you arranged for some flowers to be sent to Dan's funeral?" "Yes," I said, "actually we had Brumstix vote on the arrangement." "That's really nice," she replied, "tell everyone we really appreciate everything." So, Brumstix, Regina would like to express her appreciation for your care and concern in the wake of this tragedy. It has not gone unnoticed.

I think it should be almost complete now, unless there are more great songs that Regina hasn't shown the world. This [redacted] might be helpful, though please let me know when you're done with it so that I don't get another mean e-mail.

I'm all out of prizes to give away, sorry. That does appear to be the right disc, but it's not like they (or anyone else) have it in stock. The track ("Opposite Ends live in St. Louis") on that "White Russian Galaxy" disc is indeed the full poem though, and it is rather awesome. If you guys don't already have an mp3 of it, we can probably find a simple solution for that
