  1. What are you listening to right now?

I'm listening to St. Vincent's new song Surgeon. It's amazing! I CAN'T WAIT for the album Strange Mercy to come out!
  2. Regina faking?

^ Nice first post! I agree with you. Welcome to Brumstix!
  3. Recommend a book here...

Earlier this week, I finished A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, which was fantastic. I read it over the course of month--not that it's a long book, but I was busy with other things--so I don't know if that made it feel more epic, but it definitely was extremely great. I also read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon a couple of days ago. I finished it in one day, which is crazy for me because I'm a slow reader, but it was that great. It was completely fascinating to read a book from the point of view of an autistic kid who can't fathom emotions. Now I'm about a fifth of the way through Freedom by Jonathan Franzen, which is also really great so far! Even though I'm not close to being finished, I recommend this one too.

  5. What are you listening to right now?

Listening to Marry Me by St. Vincent. This song is like musical honey...
  6. Regina is everywhere

They can’t pull some strings where it matters.” Amen. I will love Regina Spektor until the day I die. (that last sentence also came from the paper. Although I feel the same) Sweet action. Since I'm originally from Houston, that makes me proud.
  7. I feel like I should do this. Stats Name or nickname: Just call me rosa, I kind of like it. Age: 17 Gender: Female Orientation: Straight Relationship status: Single Location: Texas Languages: English, Spanish...Pig Latin Life Occupation: High school senior. I graduate in less than a month! Hobbies/Interests: Writing, reading, observing, talking about things that interest me. Political Views: I'm really unsure about my political views. I would say neutral, but I don't think that's entirely true. Favorite Things Foods: Pizza, Mexican food, various fruits Color: Blue, green Books: Harry Potter, Harriet the Spy, The House of the Spirits, Brave New World, The Good Earth, Ethan Frome...and others. I love me some Faulkner. TV: The Office, Top Chef, So You Think You Can Dance, House Movies: The Social Network, You've Got Mail, Pride and Prejudice, Mean Girls, Doubt Music: Regina, obviously. Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent, the Dirty Projectors, the Morning Benders, Deerhunter, Sin Bandera, Rilo Kiley, Fiona Apple, Jesca Hoop, Adele, The Black Keys, and more. Origin or meaning of your Username: I made it up when I was 12. I think I chose it because the rose is the flower of June, which is the month I was born. First time you heard Regina: I saw the music video for Fidelity on VH1 and was intrigued. Then I found her website, listened to Songs in its entirety, and fell in love. Top 5 Regina Spektor songs: I know pretty much everyone here can relate to this--I go through phases in which I'm obsessed with certain songs by Regina. I would say at the moment my five favorite songs of hers are Summer in the City, Small Town Moon, 8th Floor, You Don't Know Me (not exactly her song, I know), and Happy Hooker. Random fact about yourself: I'm really short. I'm under 5 feet. If I had a dollar for every time someone looked down at me and said in shock, "You're short!" (as if I didn't know)...I would be able to purchase several expensive items. Who/What inspires you: There are three people whose judgment I trust more than anyone else's: my older sister, my dad, and one of my teachers at school. I aspire to be like them. I hope I can eventually inspire someone the way they have inspired me. Best thing about last year: I'm still waiting! Just kidding. My family is healthy, and that's great. Looking forward to this year: Being successful in college, hopefully.

  9. What are you listening to right now?

I'm listening to Useful Chamber by the Dirty Projectors. This song is so hypnotic and interesting, I can't stop listening to it.

    Pure Imagination by Maroon 5.
  11. Let's go to the Movies...

I watched Rio today--just to drool over Jesse Eisenberg's voice, not gonna lie. But I liked it a lot more than I thought I would, which makes me happy because I wanted to like it. It was SUCH a cute movie. I definitely recommend it.
  12. school = :(

    Congratulations, Jeremy!
  13. Six Thoughts...

quote: Originally posted by SocksOnRight: 1. This is the first time I have been on/ posted in the stix in ages. 2. I should listen to Regina more. I haven't listened to her in months. Long time no see, Eliza! Hello there. I haven't listened to Regina in a while either. About two months ago I would listen to "Buildings" on repeat, but then I stopped for some reason. Now for six thoughts: 1. I have school tomorrow. My district was going to have this Monday off because it was a bad weather day, but now we have to make it up after all because we missed a day of school in January due to snow. 2. My district is stupid. 3. School is stupid. 4. About two weeks ago, I fell in love with Jesse Eisenberg. Is anyone else here a fan? 5. Yesterday, I was watching The Social Network for the hundredth time, and my sister joined me. She's my best friend and I love her to death, but I wanted to smack her upside the head when she said Jesse was, and I quote, "insanely unattractive." Beg to differ. 6. How is everyone doing?

^ But that has its benefits, right? Happy birthday, George!
  15. school = :(

Hi, George! And hey, lennonist--I read some of your posts, and you seem like a very cool person.

I'm such a stranger around these parts nowadays! I feel like a stranger around here too. I haven't been posting a lot lately, what with all the stuff I have to do. This has been a very busy and stressful year, but I'm good--especially since it's the weekend. I have never looked forward to weekends more than this year.

  18. Good News Thread!

I've dreamed about doing that kind of thing before (although I would never have the guts to actually do it). Good for you! My good news is that the weekend has finally arrived. It's my senior year, and I am so overwhelmed and stressed. I wish the weekend was longer, but I am beyond relieved that it's finally here.
  19. ^ I've never seen that picture before either, but it's really striking! Her Russian-ness really seems to come through in that picture.

She'll probably will never see this, but...happy birthday, Regina!!
  21. Good News Thread!

^ Aw, that sounds cute. I probably would have bought it too. Good news: St. Vincent is working on a new album! YAY!!
  22. Awards Season! (Oscars and Golden Globes)

I didn't think Chris Colfer deserved the Golden Globe, but I was happy for him anyway. I really wished Hugh Laurie had won in his category, but for all I know, Steve Buscemi deserved the award.
  23. Favorite songs at the moment?

Right now, my favorite is Music Box...although I think I tend to forget how good Hotel Song is until I listen to it.
  24. Let's go to the Movies...

It's not like any other movie when you just have to 'accept' the ending. This one is so different. It makes you analyze what you just saw, get your own conclusions and maybe develop the author's thought and idea the way you want/feel. Yes, I realize the purpose of ambiguity. Notice that I said I thought there was too much of it. On the other hand, now that it's been a while since I've seen the movie, I like it more. It's fun and interesting to try to figure out what really happened and what didn't. It can be frustrating too, though. quote: Originally posted by Appt: ^That's the thing - she wasn't or at least it was not shown directly. Beth was the one that got hit but there were several details that suggested that from that moment on (car hitting Beth) the story is Nina's hallucinations before her dying moment hence she was the one involved in the crash (abrupt transition between the accident scene and the scene at the hospital; Nina's leg changing into swan's leg by breaking and her hitting her head, and the final revelation of the fatal wound while she's lying = like on a pavement dying). Maybe that's just overcomplicating things but y'now literature majors tend to incline towards weird-ish analyses To tell you the truth, that seems kind of far-fetched, but it's definitely an interesting theory. That sure didn't occur to me.
  25. Let's go to the Movies...

I don't remember her being hit by a car. Could you remind me?
