  1. Good News Thread!

The weather is getting cooler. Also, tomorrow I get to see John Mayer in concert (again)! I saw him last March, and he was awesome. I was surprised that I liked it so much because I'm not a huge fan of his.
  2. Bear spektor ??

  3. Human of the Year

Ah, the Town Hall recording is my favorite version of Human of the Year ever. I adore the way she sings the last "All mankind are now your brothers." I wish she would always sing the word "mankind" the way she did there.
  4. Abstinence.. No, not like that

  8. school = :(

School starts tomorrow for me. Up until this last week, I'd been wanting school to start since it ended in May. This past week has been so busy for me that I finally appreciated that it was summer. Now I wish I had more time so I could appreciate it some more.
  9. New music we should all hear

quote: Originally posted by Reginaoverdose: Okay so I searched nellie mckay thinking that there may be a whole thread on her, that's how good she is. Not even one result for her name came up! 10. Regina dancing....sort of. :-P

Oh, goodness. I swear I just played with that thing for five minutes. Not sure if this deserved its own thread, but it was definitely entertaining.
  11. What are you listening to right now?

Delirious by Mario Spinetti. What a cool song!
  12. College Essay Help

I probably shouldn't start a whole topic about this, but I'm worried that if I just posted in another thread, it would be overlooked. This is important. I was hoping someone who's had experience writing good college essays would like to read one of mine. I'm worried that I'm not selling myself right in this essay...I feel like I'm saying too many negative things about myself, and I need help. I don't want to ask my friends or my teachers or my older sister for help on this particular essay because it is so personal to me. I don't mind someone who hasn't met me reading it. If anyone is interested, please tell me...if not, I don't blame you.

Thank you, Jamie. Edit: Sent! If you want to, you can remove your email address from your post.

(Though if you'd rather not, I'd still be okay with reading just yours!) Thanks. I'm not really looking for proofreading, I just wanted someone to look over the content as a whole. Could you give me your email address? If anyone else wants to see my essay, I'm all for it. I'd like as many opinions as possible.

  16. Bittersweet News!

Thanks, George. quote: Originally posted by eshbach: I moved from Pennsylvania to California for college, and being that far away forced me to break out of my secure little world and venture into reality (or at least San Luis Obispo, a nice intermediate between childhood fantasy land and the real word). Ah, wow. Much bigger difference! And you're right. There's a university 30 minutes from where I live which my sister goes to, but it's not that great. A lot of people at my school end up going there...it's kind of known as a cop-out school. I like that it's so close, but my standards are higher than that. Going far away is probably what I need.

I guess that's how my brain functions. Ha ha! And I agree, it would be sweet. My bittersweet news is that yesterday I visited UT Austin (Longhorn Saturday!). I really, really liked it, but I don't like that it's far away from where I live (although it could be farther...one girl came from Chicago), and anyway, I still don't feel ready for college. I can't believe how close I am to adulthood.
  18. quote: Originally posted by ThisIsHowItWorks: Begin to Hope (with a new intro that isn't the same as MOATF, of course) I agree. I remember back when Far was about to come out, I was hoping she would eliminate the intro to Man of a Thousand Faces altogether and just sing as soon as the song started. Just a thought...I thought it would sound more powerful (not sure if that's the right word), and it would avoid confusion if she ever put Begin to Hope on an album, which I hope she does. I would also love to see 8th Floor on the next album, although that would be unlikely. But if she did, I would love if it sounded exactly like the live recording with Anders Griffen on drums...maybe with a subtle, not cheesy, echoing effect. Just sayin'.

But every other song I at least like, like Occident, No Provenance, '81, You and Me Bess...The songs I absolutely love are Easy, Good Intentions Paving Company, On a Good Day, In California, Soft as Chalk, Esme, and Ribbon Bows. All the rest I like a whole lot. Such a solid album, especially considering all of that music. quote: But, I'm glad to hear their are several fans because no one I know is a fan of hers :/. I hope you can see her live, I really want to see her live too . I only have one friend who's a fan of Joanna, but she lives in Arkansas now. Anyway, she doesn't like her as much as I do, so I can almost relate. And thanks! I hope you get to see her too.
  20. What are you listening to right now?

Maybe to show that even though people promise to do something, in this case that she would always remember what Emily taught her, we don't always follow through. Hmmm...I love Joanna. Anyway, right now I'm listening to "Avenue of Trees" and "Unmentionables" by the Parenthetical Girls. I always have to listen to the two songs together because the transition between them is awesome. Seamless. Also, "Unmentionables" is one of my favorite songs ever, even if it is less than two minutes long.
  21. Good News Thread!

I've been having trouble writing one of my college essays, but I'm finally getting somewhere. Better news: two of my friends were in a car crash yesterday, and the car is destroyed, but they are both okay. Shaken, but not hurt.

quote: Originally posted by marjerina: I'm terrified about the actual process of applying... but I'm sorta excited for college itself? Maybe? I don't even know Ha ha, I'm the opposite! I'm not nervous about applying - mostly I just think it's tedious - but I'm terrified of college. UT is a huge school, and I really wanted to go to a small school, but UT is my number one choice anyway. I guess that's strange. A new rant...I lost my iPod. I still have the headphones somehow, but I have looked everywhere around my house for the past two days and have not found it. I suspect someone accidentally threw it in the trash or something. And this is the second iPod I've owned. My first one was stolen at school. I'm going to wait a while and look for it some more, but if I don't find it, I will buy a new one. Maybe I shouldn't because I'm irresponsible like that, but I need a portable music player...and if I get another one, or even if I find my current one, I will lock it in a safe when I am not listening to it.
  23. Joanna Newsom Fans

I'm a Joanna Newsom fan! There are plenty of us here. She's one of my very favorites, right next to Regina (although they're nothing alike). I thought Have One on Me was phenomenal. I've read some people's opinions that the album sounds to them as though Joanna couldn't decide which songs to put on the album, so she used all of them. It doesn't seem that way to me, but even if that is the case, I don't mind at all. There is not one song I don't like, not even No Provenance, which seems underrated. Now I just wish I could see her live! But I don't think she's been to Texas since 2006.
  24. Wee Rants

I started filling out my ApplyTexas this morning (I'm applying to the University of Texas at Austin). I'm so nervous. All of my friends are ready for college, and I'm not. Thankfully, I have a year. I hope by this time next year I'm pumped...right now I'm not feeling it at all.
  25. does Regina have a boyfriend?

Courtney, Jackie and the notorious Vodka Dave were in the house as well although my dancing shoes were not awake enough to follow them into the night. " Thanks. I was reading the third paragraph of the blog several times, and I was like, "Am I missing something?" Ha ha. I think it was obvious that Regina and Jack are together. Anyway, good for them. quote: Originally posted by Anthony Minsky: I'm choosing not to believe it. Of course I want her to be happy, but I also want to keep my fantasy going too.
