  1. language nerds !!!!

thanks Perks, very cool! the way you explain it, the absence of an adjective (should have said that!) or even another word for feeling embarrassed because of someone else makes sense. "plaatsvervangende" is a dutch verb (plaatsvervangen: to replace) turned into an adjective. Il faut... I know that one, or, well, I starkly remember an exact sentence from my high school french book which used it: "Il faut travailler! le president il arrives(?) á notre village çette matin!" I recall it meant "one should get to work the President is coming to the village this afternoon!" Dutch for certainty: "men moet aan het werk! de President komt vanmiddag in ons dorp!" it was what madame Soussison (grocery store-keep ) said to the gathered townspeople of st. Jean-Pierre-les-trois-pompes after hearing of the impending visit of the President of France to st. Jean-Pierre-les-trois-pompes.* oof, my written French is rusty! I should polish it when I have the time. tricky one too, il faut, not an easy answer... one should. Back to "il faut", yes, certainly, maybe some stixers noticed, I use "one" as pronoun quite often... maybe because in Dutch there is the pronoun "men" which is used in a similar way and indeed commonly used and accepted. *(and in the end, the silly "maire" of the town had unwittingly opened a letter to st. jean-pierre-les-deux-pompes! Hilarity ensues )

I have a language question: In Dutch, there is an expression for feeling embarrasment because of another person's behavior, "plaatsvervangende schaamte" (lit.: replaced embarrasment/shame), the only translation i could come up with to English which seemed to make sense, was "embarrasment by proxy". the other person acts in an embarrassing way without shame, yet you feel very embarrassed that he/she acts so... Is there a real English term for being embarrassed because of what someone else does or says?

So I guess shes another "lib" like me . Does she even care that she's alienating fans like me who have bought so many of her CDs? BTW, I'd feel the same way about any singer who publicly validated my candidate. liking someones music should be unrelated to what he or she would vote. I quite enjoy Ted Nudgent's Rawk and guitar-style while I also find him a D1ck for his political opinion. also, you don't know anything about socialism and the many ways it can be applied by a democratic, capitalism-oriented government. I suggest you to read-up on the subject before you get all scared by republican superstitions. Sweden, under it's liberal-socialist government is no third-world country while the USA is becoming one, so there! what would you prefer for your country, a rich-poor divide on par with Burundi or a rich-poor divide similar to Scandinavia? Are you really a rich man if you've borrowed your 16 million bucks?
  6. just wondering is Regina in a relationship??

I wouldn't make out summer in the city as a girl-loves-girl kind of story, but it could very well be... or she turned it around, singing "her" ex's words (for does have nice cleavage ). are there butt/boobie lesbians like with men? I always wondered... (as in: body-curves one is most attracted to in a woman in a very supperficial manner for blue-collar-lunch-break/fratboy after-hours chit-chat and so)
  7. for everyone eligible to vote..

seen it still, who would have wanted Sarah Palin as vice-president? "I know forrin policay 'cawse Russia is just acruzz the sea and Canada's be next door, so yeah"
  8. for everyone eligible to vote..

hey, the dutchman is back I took quite an interest in this terms presidential election for the USA, truly history in the making... and then thought: "what would the stix say about it?" as expected, many of the USAbrums have voted Obama and Musiclover is hurling his usual superstitious-rightwing barf. is he the only Republican on the boards? makes the whole party look even worse... If I were American, I'd have voted for Obama... and what's wrong with socialism? a little Scandinavian-style Liberal Socialism would work miracles for the USA.
  9. A crime on my mind lately

No, I'm not planning criminal activity. Lately, I just have something on my mind a lot, something I feel completely powerless about, something no one in the world really pays attention too safe some foolish Christians who think they can solve the problem by praying... well when has that ever solved anything beyond personal feelings of despair and anguish? If prayer didn't stop Madonna from hanging from a crucifix... why should it stop a dictator and his cadre of suck-ups from abusing their people? I'm talking about North-Korea... true, there's lots of terrible things going on the world today, but North-Korea, that's a crime against humanity of great magnitude that's allready lasted for decades... I'm not talking about rockets and missiles here. That subject is actually quite irrelevant. It's the leadership of that country. That terrible, derranged, narscisist and his council of sycophants who opress, lock up, torture, starve and murder their own people. Their people who are forced into a system of absolute faith in the sadists that torture and opress them. malnourished, silenced, homeless, imprissoned if not physical, then psychologically... I just have to get this off my chest... It's terrible and there's nothing the free world can actually do about it... or can the world act but rather wouldn't for those damned economic reasons, because of China, because of Russia, supporting the last remaining rape and abuse of marxist theory, the last, true dictatorial regime in the world... It sickens me...
  10. School violence

It's terrible... what terrifies me is the news/info that it's copy-catism (?), I heard that there are some people who consider the highschool murderers (Columbine, Virginia Tech) to be heroes and will attempt to emulate their madness... like this Fin apperantly did. inconceivable... somehow there are people who believe the rants of raving maniacs to be truthful? a correct way of thinking?
  11. Troll Trap

Has anyone seen that Topic started by At Al!?!?!?~ ? I believe it's in the rants section. I mean... seriously, that's really f^ck&d up stuff... not only the typography but the content too. I suspect a troll, it can't be serious, can it? Could be for laughs though... There's something absurdistic about it... if you can manage to read bReEzAh... I mean, who the F is Dogman anyway? "Pimpin' yo"

  13. What's wrong with political threads?

It's not wrong in theory... but the way you react to other people's opinions makes political threads rather unpleasant and senseless. You'll never convince another of your point of view, nor will another turn you around on a certain subject. Yes, we can share opinions, but if an opinion is met with abuse, why should we give 'em? The Fox-news channel topic is a good example if you want to see how you turn your own valid question about a medium and opinions into something ugly.
  14. Question about Fox News Channel

what if there was a Presidential candidate called Aldo Hiller? I can imagine Fox news doing something with any name that has similarities to a certain name of a certain German dictator just as they link Obama with Osama 'cause 4 out of 5 letters are the same... with Biden adding the "Bi..n", all they need now is someone to add "Laden" in some way or other and the "Obama is a terrorist" nonsense is complete. wasn't Fox also the channel who covered the "terrorist handshake"? You know, that handshake+box between Obama and his wife? Only one of the most common greetings of young peoples around the world... Going by this information, Fox could call me and my friends terrorists too, for that's how we greet each other.

  18. so it's all a conspiracy?

After a few weeks absence from these boards, I return to find some troll, griping about a conspiracy by a freaky cult... That cult being the Brümstix! If it'd been for laughs, it would've been in just one sub-forum... heh... I can't help but wonder why this Troll thinks this way. I guess it's just one of those people with a deficiency in trust and realism. when you want to see conspiracies and subliminal messages in media, you'll see them if you try hard enough. I could say Amy Winehouse is just acting some plot cooked up by the French to sell more booze, because of her last name and the gallons of it she drinks while her penchant for self-destruction can be attributed to her first name, as it's oddly simmilar to the alcohol-free wine called Amé.
  19. pets?

aww... all those sweet animals Finally I live with a cat again. a 4 or 5 year old Ginger male called Ska. we have no litterbox but he can go outside anytime by means of improvised stairs of wooden planks (our balcony is about 2 meters from the ground) He's a tough mofo, he fights a lot with other cats. especially that gaywad Chico with his fluffy tail who has the frickin' nerve to come inside this appartment. He comes home with injuries, mice, rats and even musk rats (those are big!). He eats them too, leaving us (my bro and me) with the livers as present (ugh). he's a sweet cat though, likes to cuddle very much (chin to chin). he's also quite smart, the only cat I know to plan his own meals! most cats I've had wolfed their food as soon as they get it. Ska wants his bowl filled for the day and picks his own times to eat. and all you cat owner's should watch the "simon's cat" animations, they're fantastic!

"...imagine those chickens were white." - Why they gotta be white chickens? You got something 'gainst white chickens? ... isn't white a regular colour for Chickens? a lot of chickens have white feathers... and when you cook 'em, the meat (inside) will be white too... though, apparently having white feathers seems more common in battery chickens... Meat Production is becoming quite a headache for the planet and it's dominant animal (us), especially cattle, whose poo adds to green house gasses... In my province there's still a lot of old fashioned, small scale, mixed farming. however, the provincial and national governments want to build "Pigflats" in some places. These "flats" will house 15,000 pigs if they are ever built (This could be small fries compared to US farms, as we Europeans have the impression that everything is much bigger over there). The rationale of the higher organisations (Provincial Estates and Secretariat of agriculture and ANIMAL WELLFARE) is that it would be more efficient and better for the environment. The municipalities involved however are very much opposed. The buildings will be ugly and the designers of this plan put in not a single tought on animal well-being. In essence the whole idea is a disguised plan to relocate problems, rather than solving them. I read the entire plan, and it's mostly economic while also providing for dispersed/alleviated polution trough manure and other farm waste in certain places. agrarian waste will be kept from certain "heritage" area's, and will pile up in an other place. The animals will live inside their whole short life because there's no space for 15,000 pigs to go outside (it's a small country mind you...). And all because Noord-Brabant (province bordering Belgium) wants to preserve their already stressed environment, they'll move their ambitious breedingbarracks to the Netherlands' Garden (Overijssel).

They could have met once or twice though, on the big Dutch open-air festivals (if they were both booked)... but Amy influenced by Anouk? no, not at all. Amy Winehouse's main influence is Dinah Washington.
  23. Anouk

OMG! I never expected THIS name to show up here, the praised name of the most famous Dutch Rock Chick from the Hague (IMO she's not the best though)... She's very good, has been going at it for about 9-10 years all ready and she's been trying for ages to get a break in the US. I think she's hot ... she is also known to have quite an 'attitude'. I think she's the one and only diva we have here in this little north-sea corner of Europe. also worth checking out is Ellen ten Damme. Also rock, but more whimsical.
  24. Question about Fox News Channel

Just to add a dollar (too long for a penny), how could it be wrong if a news channel prefers a certain political movement above other movements if said channel is one out of many? It is an Urban Myth that journalism must be unbiased. It's an impossibility. Everyone, even journalists have their prefered political movements. And, even while being professional, will still lean towards writing/shooting an article/segment that fits into their own mind. It's usually in editting that certain parts are left out (space issue most of the time), and the reporter/editor will leave out all the stuff he doesn't care about or agrees or disagrees with (depending on the subject, time and possibly the desires of the editor-in-chief). There are a few subjects that can be reported on unbiased though, but politics without bias or preferences? I don't think it can be done. Journalism can't be absolutely neutral or unbiased in each separate segment, but with a balance between (par example) left and right wing segments in a single edition can still be considered unbiased as we get to see both sides (yet theres some caveats, as an overly right wing channel could of course edit the left wing segments in certain ways to defame the interviewed politicians/voters). and last but not least: In a country with so many television channels, why complain about a single, biased channel? There's tons of other channels who offer an alternative view.
  25. language nerds !!!!

hey all, a new language post for BeeBo... Yesterday I started work as a cleaner at a local decorating foil factory. Both my boss and coleague are Germans who speak mostly german, so I have to speak German too! It's been like nine years since I dropped it from my high school curriculum (suddenly I failed it while I had done so well the year before) so I really had to dig deep to both understand and talk with the guys :s however, after two days with the Germans I'm really improving. Not that I understand everything they say, but it's getting easier. German is a little bit like Dutch, yet so entirely different also! it's hard. Again I praise my awesome memory for words
