  1. Recommend a book here...

Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez--Love in the time of cholera, No one writes to the colonel, and of course One Hundred Years of Solitude William Faulkner--my favorite is The Sound and the Fury Albert Camus--The Stranger (though this one has already been recommended) others--Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead, The Kingdom of this World (Alejo Carpentier), Heart of Darkness, and lots and lots of history books that probably some of you wouldn't find to be that interesting to read. that is it for now
  2. Let's go to the Movies...

Okay, I will add my two cents to this thread (which like other people I always wanted to start but never did for some reason or another)...Anyway, a short list would include--- *Anything by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Yojimbo, The Hidden Fortress, Drunken Angel, The Quiet Duel, Ikiru (My personal favorite), Red Beard, Throne of Blood, Ran, Sanjuro and Kagemusha among many others) *24 hour party people *2046, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love *Aguirre, The Wrath of God *All the films of Alexandro Jodorowski (Holy Mountain, El Topo, Fando y Lis) *Amores Perros *Army of Darkness (and anything with Bruce Campbell in it (he is THE MAN) *Brazil (and other Gilliam films like 12 Monkeys, The Fisher King, Tideland, FLLV, etc) *Buffalo 66 *Carandiru *Clockwork Orange *The Constant Gardener *The Cooler *Dogville (and its companion piece Mandarlay) (and since we are on Von Trier, then also The Five Obstructions) *Dr. Strangelove *Downfall *Dummy *Ed Wood *Elling *Eraserhead *Field of Dreams (makes me cry every time) *The Full Monty *Go (very, very underrated) *Goodbye Lenin *Ichi the Killer *Intermission *All the works of Tarantino (especially Jackie Brown) *Kitchen Stories *Last Tango in Paris *LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE (THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FILM EVER [maybe I'm exaggerating but it is one of my two favorites of all time]) *Layer Cake *The Life Aquatic *Lord of War *Lost in Translation *Magnolia *The Man who Copied *Memento *Me and You and Everyone We Know *Million Dollar Baby *Anything and everything Monty Python *New Waterford Girl *Nosferatu (The Klaus Kinski version) *Oldboy *PARIS TEXAS (MY NUMBER ONE FILM OF ALL TIME) *Pi (as well as Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream and the highly underrated The Fountain [last year's best film]) *The Proposition (the way a Western in supposed to be) *Punch Drunk Love *Raging Bull *The Royal Tenenbaums *Run Lola Run (Franka Potente is so, so very beautiful) *The Science of Sleep *Sexy Beast (Ben Kingsley's best performance to date) *Shaun of the Dead *Shallow Grave *The Shape of Things (so, so very good) *This is Spinal Tap *Sweet Sixteen (such an amazingly sad film) *Tarnation (just Wow!) *Taxi Driver *Tokyo Godfathers/Triplets of Belleville (and lots more anime) *Trainspotting (god, I want them to get the cast back together so they can film Porno [the sequel's title]) *21 grams *L'enfant *Undertow *Y tu Mama Tambien *City of God *Our Lady of the Assassins *Pan's Labyrinth and many, many, many more *Looking forward to the release of Stardust, and Across the Universe
  3. So...I'm using my phone to post this since [not to show off or anything ] I'm at the actual game. So far, it's been a great game and we're up 2-0 ...so hopefully at least Cynthia is watching and suffering along the rest of her fellow Brazilians (I really hope this gloating doesn't come back to bite me in the ass as Mexico has a history of getting too cocky [gee, i wonder where i got that trait from] when they're up and losing the game in the end) Anyway...for those of you who are futbol, football, soccer, whatever...fans, this topic's for you
  4. It should be a great game, particularly with the world's best player (Lionel Messi) on the field...I'm rooting for the US but they're going to have a hard time...then again, Mexico surprised me so why not the US?---hopefully they put Keller and not Howard on goal
  5. quote: Originally posted by Cynthia: What's up with all the negativity towards us, poor brazilians? Oh, Lino, you guys are going to win. I think things would have been different, tho, if the referee hadn't annulled a perfectly legal goal. No negativity was meant at all...it's just that this is one of those rare times when my national team has been able to beat your mighty (times a million) team...so if I don't take this chance to rub it in, then it might be years before I get another... Also, Robinho was clearly offsides and that is why the goal shouldn't have and didn't count...

Don't be a hater brotha June 7, 1977, Madison Square Garden.....what a night. My ticket cost $10.50. I can't even begin to imagine just how awesome that night must've been. Lucky, lucky you ...and then, to top it all off the ticket was just over 10 bucks!!!

  10. what gigs have you been to/got lined up in 2007

06/23--The Police (this one I'm going because of my gf) [i was thankfully able to get out of this one as I no longer have a gf and she got the tickets on the settlement ] 07/21--Ozzfest 09/28--Joanna Newsom (cancelled my trip to London, so I'm not going to this one anymore. New additions--- Chris Cornell--07-11 The White Stripes--11-19 Gogol Bordello--08-28 Devendra Banhart--10-13 Just added tonight-- Daniel Johnston--08-23 As for the Brazilian flag...I actually got it on that trip to Brazil I once talked (or wrote or whatever) to you about...got it because my football team (Club America) will always be in debt to the great Brazilian players that gave us so many championships in the 70s, and 80s. You probably don't care, but I just thought I'd clarify. Okay, then.
  11. Once

I just watched the trailer and I have to say that it looks like such a great film...I'll definitely keep my eyes open when it comes around my area... I'm a sucker for musicals and if it is half as good as hedwig and the angry inch, then I'll be very pleased. Thanks for the recommendation.
  12. Regina at Bonnaroo 2007 Gallery (new added)

Once again, thank you for sharing...you are awesome!!! Personally, I love all of them but especially number 6
  13. Regina should play Prokofiev Piano Sonatas

That would actually be fun...I'd love to see reg sprinkle in some Peter and the Wolf into her sets...maybe right after Bobbing for Apples and That Time

  16. Flaming Lips at Bonnaroo 2007 (photo gallery)

Thanks for the great pics, damn I wish I could've been there, oh well... I gotta say, that stage is one of the most impressive and awesome that I've ever seen...I can't begin to imagine how impressive that must've been live... Again, thanks
  17. Music that makes you laugh hard

Saw Peaches when they opened for NIN and two years ago during the John Waters Christmas at UCLA...I have to say that she kicks some serious ass (though her music is obviously not the most deep and meaningful, she puts on a great and extremely entertaining show)
  18. what gigs have you been to/got lined up in 2007

quote: Originally posted by Cynthia: Please, Lino, tell Jack and Meg to come back to Brazil next year! Hell, for you and all of our Brazilian brothers and sisters I will make sure to yell it out at every chance I get. (Seriously though I'll even take my Brazilian flag to represent y'all)

True, but as you said the older stuff kicks ass...and we will always have that.
  22. Happy birthday, Perks (a.k.a Jessica)!!!!!

After that, liking Cazuza is cool here! I LOVE Cazuza's music...I actually got into it through the music of two other personal favorites ( Bersuit Vergarabat and Os Mutantes) especially after hearing Beruit's cover of O TEMPO NÃO PÁRA...Unfortunately I have not seen the movie but I've heard mostly good things about it (particularly Daniel de Oliveira's performance). [in a related film note, three of my favorite films from the recent decade come from Brazil--Carandiru, City of God and The Man Who Copied) I never really thought about it before, but some of my favorite artists are actually from Brazil...aside from the already mentioned I also like Raul Seixas, Caetano Veloso, Legião Urbana, Jorge Ben, Sylvio Caldas, Gilberto Gil, Joao Gilberto, et cetera
