"Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori" LYRICS!

Recommended Posts

Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori (i.e., "it's hard to live"; lit. "It is sweet and proper to die for one's country") more here.. thanks srg

After all, everything'd been said and done

I feel, I feel better now

Come away, lay your hands and rest and close your eyes

say a prayer for those who've gone.

It's hard, it's hard,

It's hard, it's hard.

To live, to live,

To live, to live.

It's hard, it's hard,

It's hard, it's hard.

To live, to live,

To live, to live.

It's hard, it's hard,

it's hard, it's harder

Than it's ever been before.

Things that used to comfort me,

don't comfort me anymore.

After all, the children being born into

a time of searching for some glory

And the lie's still repeating through the years

Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori

It's hard, it's hard,

It's hard, it's hard.

To live, to live,

To live, to live.

It's hard, it's hard,

It's hard, it's hard.

To live, to live,

To live, to live.

It's hard, it's hard,

it's hard, it's harder

Than it's ever been before.

Things that used to comfort me,

don't comfort me anymore.

But you can't spend your whole life waiting for god,

to kiss you.

You can't spend your whole life waiting for god,

to kiss you.

Can't spend your whole life waiting for god,

to kiss you back.

Come on, come on, come on, back.

It's hard, it's hard.

It's hard, it's hard.

To live, to live,

To live, to live.

It's hard, it's hard,

It's hard, it's hard.

To live, to live,

To live, to live.

It's hard, it's hard,

it's hard, it's harder

Than it's ever been before.

Things that used to comfort me,

don't comfort me anymore.

But you can't spend your whole life waiting for god,

to kiss you.

You can't spend your whole life waiting for god,

to kiss you.

Can't spend your whole life waiting for god,

to kiss you back.

Come on, come on, come on, back.

Kiss you back, kiss you back,

Kiss you back, kiss you back.

Just a little correction:

The line "A million lives still repeating through the years" should be "and the lie's still repeating through the years"

To understand this, read this poem:

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,

Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,

Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs

And towards our distant rest began to trudge.

Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots

But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;

Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots

Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,

Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;

But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,

And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .

Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,

As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,

He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace

Behind the wagon that we flung him in,

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,

His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old Lie: Dulce et Decorum est

Pro patria mori.

Oh, this is such a cool coincidence. I wanted to see what was up with Sarah McLachlan lately, so I checked a fansite, and ended up reading the FAQ, which contained a question asking where the title of her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, came from. That very same poem was the answer. (By the way, I didn't find any big news.)

That being said, the poem is very good. And a source of inspiration for quite a few, it seems.
