I am in the unique position of being the only other person that Regina asked not to share songs at one time (that I know of). From this perspective, I can relate to Peter Pan very well. I never shared my recordings with anyone, because it was the right thing to do. Not because it was selfish, or elitist, but because it was respectful.

When I was lucky enough to receive a copy of the 1999 Demo Tape, as a person "trusted" not to post it in the wild (a trust that I think I earned through the aforementioned experience) I was stunned and fearful of being on-the-hook for maintaining Regina's trust in her fans. The sheer reverence that I have for her as an artist and a person compelled me to never dare tell anyone that I had the songs. Not even my closest friends or fellow stixers. I zipped it, and locked it up. Being elitist was never a factor - it was complete awe and respect for a great artist and her wishes. I didn't want to be the one to do wrong by her.

NOW, knowing how it made me feel - I can't even comprehend why someone else would've decided to upload the tape to be shared en masse. It just doesn't compute for me. There is no social justice in it. It is not anyone's right to hear these songs - it is a profound privilege.

As happened the first time that Regina made such a request, someone eventually showed up with a self-righteous attitude and a misguided idea that they were "empowering the people". That person succeeded in breaking Regina's trust and potentially harmed her career - those songs may have been disqualified from a movie soundtrack because they were leaked.

This place has become far more juvenile than I ever expected when I first joined. It's not due to an elitist attitude from the long-time stixers (who are among the most level headed and kind people that I know), but rather to a feeling of entitlement from the new members. Nobody here has entitlement, most notably those who have not yet earned trust, or built a relationship with anybody. Do not condemn those who are close friends for treating each other as such. Do not complain about not being included in a friendship that you have not made the effort to build. This negative portrayal of old-stixers paints a picture: Walk into a shopping mall, find a random group of friends, jump into the middle of their conversation. You will not be treated as well as those who have been friends for years. Are these people elitist because they treat their close friends better than newcomers? No, but if you make an effort to be friendly, you will also make friends yourself.

This is common sense in life, as well as on the internet.

yes.

what he said.

I'm sorry, but what JohnnyC wrote is just plain wrong. Sharing the tape in the first place was wrong. Period. Regina wanted it to be heard by the least number of people possible. Period. And to defend sharing the tape is, in my mind, a disgusting act of self-justification. And he calls US juvenile for getting upset at the elitism and secretiveness present in brumstix? When all this time we have believed that this was a community of people who respected Regina, as well as one another? It makes me sick. I think the select group of 15-20 people are the juvenile ones.

I joined the stix 10 months ago after being a lurker for over a year before that.

I made my mind up to join because it seemed like a fun forum to be a part of, and to start off with it was and I was made particularly welcome by two long time stixers who made me feel I had made the right decision.

Sadly of those two stixers one has already left (rawin) and the other has said she wont post anymore (Brenna) and since then there has been a few other people who I've had a bit of banter with and I appreciate them for that ( but theres not many)

..but I've always thought there was an underlying feeling of elitism among some members but decided to not let it bother me and get on with doing my own thing, but this demo tape business and more importantly the reaction to it has really pissed me off.

I dont want to go into the whole *should it be shared or not business* because thats already been flogged to death but it seems that when it was, it was the people who already had it that reacted badly..yes because Reginas wishes were ignored but moreso in my opinion it was a sense of disappointment that they werent the chosen ones anymore and maybe a hint of guilt..guilt that rawin has already been big enough to admit to,and those same people are the ones now who are trying to calm things down or make light of the situation.

Obviously Reginas new album comes out in less than 3 weeks and this place should be buzzing with the excitement..and yes I know some threads are but overall the stix is falling apart and a lot of long time, multiple post members are leaving and that,I think is very sad.

I'm not going to say that I'm leaving ( I honestly dont think anyone would give a shit), but I dont feel as if I want to be as active anymore.

Well i'm not going to down the "elitist" road cause that is just taking it too far. But honestly ask yourselves, what would Regina think of this? I'm slightly pissed off, i mean i don't get how some of the old members can say brumstix is a family and we hide nothing from each other when this stuff is going on.

i'm definelty not leaving, but please the peoples who recieved the songs own up and if youse truly are think that this demo should not be shared online, delete your files or something. i haven't listened to the demo yet anyway cause if regina clearly stated she didn't want it shared, its easy to follow a command. but now i truly don't know whats going on or what exactly she said...i need a time machine.

EDIT: god i'm terrible at serious drama llama posts and i love rawin.

Do you guys honestly think they would have done this if they had known what kind of consequences it would have? Don't you think, had none of this happened, you would have excepted the songs if they had been offered to you?

People do stupid shit, people also change. No one is perfect.

I love all of you guys; I really think it's a huge mistake for any of you to leave.

no i wouldn't of accepted the songs, cause regina said she didn't want them to be shared. why is it so hard to follow a simple command, i know no one is perfect, but you can't use that as an excuse.

You're right, I probably wouldn't either, and I still haven't, but we can't know for sure what we would have done unless we were directly offered the songs at the time that this happened, in my opinion.

I will stop bringing up this thread (you should too Big Grin), I just wanted to add my thoughts.

I'm with bum bum, though I know for sure I want to see people owning up and apologising. I thought brumstix was a family but it seems we changed it to an online forum to make it easier for some people to get over it, well I'm nor buying it. I want the truth.
