Walking in... (your town here)

Recommended Posts

Random but rather interesting topic here...

I met a guy this weekend who comes from Memphis, Tennessee - He gave me a dollar!

Anyway... The bar my friends and I were at happened to be having a karioki night and we thought it only right for this guy frm Memphis to get up and sing "Walking in Memphis" (by Cher... So he did!

Turns out he had never heard the song... ever! So as you can imagin his half drunk, off key, sing along session was a rather painful one... But then it got me thinking...

Do you know of a song that has been written about your town/city?

this is an interesting prospect. off the top of my head i could only think of these:

beach boys "susie cincinnati"

ray charles "the cincinnai kid"

and someone told me there is a big and rich song with cincy in it.

to be honest... i really love cincinnati, even though im in the suburbs, it is a really great place to live near because there is alot to do, and i always claim to have no culture, but cincinnati is pretty cultured. if you are from cincy you probly are very german (i am almost half german actually!) and we hold the worlds second largest oktoberfest!!! which i am not allowed to attend (but will when im 21) Smiler and there is also taste of cincinnati, and lots of museums, kings island, and a zoo and lots of history to discover. i love cincinnati and it has taken me a long time to be proud of it, but i can genuinly say... i am proud of cincy. Smiler

there is a new HBO sitcom called "john from cincinnati" so.. i guess cincinnati is a fairly well known city.

jeez im stuck in the bible belt and this is one of THE most religious towns EVER! they all think science is the works of the devil and Harry Potter is a demon.... there is OVER 30 churches in this town...

heres how a song from my town would go

"walkin in Jonesboro

youll never see a magic show

because bible beaters say magics the devil

and we all know this town is a pile of bull

and the people all throw bibles at you

telling you to go and praise him or what else they do

theyll make you go to church every night

these people they re just a scary sight

throwing religion at you without a choice

bury yourself in some regina noise

and move to a different town

BECAUSE THIS TOWN WILL GIVE YOU THE BIGGEST FROWN!!"

took me five minutes to come up with this....

Big Grin enjoy me! jk

stuck in the bible belt!

Hanover! haha there is no song written about it at least none remotely famous. It's called the "snack food capital" or something because we have Utz chips and Snyder's pretzels and Hershey is near us which is very very well known, hahaha. Wink

"Gonna Fly Now (Rocky Theme)" And it is REQUIRED to sing it when you run up the steps Wink

"Philadelphia Freedom" Elton John

"Streets of Philadelphia" Bruce Springsteen

And supposedly "Bandstand Boogie" by Barry Manilow even though he only mentions Philly once in the chorus, haha!

Middle of the Hill- Josh Pyke

He grew up in my home town- Balmain, inner Sydney City

there are heaps of songs written about Sydney in general, and suburbs in particular, or so says wikipedia- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_about_Sydney

i just love this song, it's about being a kid and growing up in an inner city suburb, before it got up-market like it is now but it wasn't when i was a kid myself

"When I was a kid I grew up in a house on a hill

Not the top, not the bottom, but the middle

And i still remember where I cracked my head

In the vacant lot, there's a row of tiny houses there now

And we used to light fires in the gutters

And I could cool my head on the concrete steps

But the girl down the street hit my sister on the head

With a stick and we hid behind my father

As he knocked on the parents' door

To tell the them what she did

But the parents were drunk so they really didn't give a shit

And the girl down the street said a dog couldn't bark

'Cause a man with an axe cut its voicebox out

But my older sister told me that it prob'ly wasn't true

And I believe what she said 'cause she took me by the hand

One time when a coupla men drove down the hill in a white van

Said there was a phone box filled with money 'round the corner

And I woulda gone along but she took me by the hand

To the house in the middle of the hill

In the middle of the hill, in the middle of the hill

And my mother knew the words to a lot of different songs

And we'd always sing the harmonies, yeah we'd sing along

She had cold, cold hands when the fever hit

And then the noises that the trains made sounded like people in my head

And the stories that the ceiling told

Through the pictures and the grains in the pine-wood boards

And let me stay outside 'til the sky went red

And I could cool my head on the concrete steps

And you could never really see the top from the bottom

But I don't pay enough attention to the good things when I got 'em

And you could never really see the top from the bottom

I don't pay enough attention to the good things when I got 'em (x 4)"
