A Cannon

Recommended Posts

a cannon was fired by the light of the moon

I'm waiting, the boat should be here very soon

and I mind less and less all the silly

pictures that hang round my room for now

I write you a letter, I hope you feel better

I hope you forgive the transgression, Ive given

you love and I've given you anger as well

and I meant them both

I always knew it was coming this way

I always knew a big boat would come and

take me away

I stood on my bed then I slipped on my dress

then I ran through the halls like a ghost and in case

someone heard me I grabbed up a dagger

that Id never use unless

bare feet on a cobblestone street, then a beach

then a splash in my ankles, my knees, then my thighs

and my eyes open wide, I threw myself right into the sea

and I could see it was coming my way

I always knew a big boat would come and

take me away

I've woken up once and I've woken up twice

and I've woken up millions and millions of times

somebody's got to tell all the people to be like the water

I would if I could but I can't so I dont

my heart breaks too easy, my words get all jumbled

and when I wear lipstick then no one

understands me at all

they think I'm saying hello and goodbye

what I'm really saying is ...

I've woken up once and I've woken up twice

and I've woken up millions and millions of times

To me,

that song is about the end of a love affair. The narrator is a woman who cannot stay with the same guy for a long time. She feels like fleeing and dreams of travels. She wants to purify her emprisoned mind in the sea.

Or ...

A woman lives with someone. But she can't take it any longer. She wants freedom, dreams of going away, live something else, far away from that place. But in fact, she can't, and no boat will ever come. So, she flees by drowning in the sea. And during her drowning, she realises everyone should be like the water, she feels good and free, she starts to change state and become a part of the sea.

The parts about waking up may mean that she's now fed up of waking so many times OR that she woke up even though she had tried to stop waking up. And now, she does not want to wake up no more, so she opts for drowning.

In the last strophe, we get to know that the woman feels out of place in the world, no one understands her as she tries to become another (lipstick), she can't stand this life.

What do you think?

I love that song !!!

Those are good thoughts Val. This song is at such a fast space that I usually have a bunch of scenes flying through my head while listening to it but I never came up with a full interpretation of what it means.

The part with the lipstick and no one hearing or listening to what I' saying reminds me of my job at the supermarket.I could say anything to people, but they only expect me to say hello and good bye, so that's what they hear.

For me this song is about wanting to let go and get out of your "small town". Yeah, a similar theme as Small Town Moon.

I've woken up millions of times is talking about the every-day life that's always the same and never ends. The author really want it to end though.

Like, when I was a kid I had this dream a car would pull up to me while I was singing and say "Hey you. you should be in our new pop group. Like the Spice Girls." (yeah I know... don't judge.)

So: a small kid, or young adult, wanting to get out of a place where no one listenes to him/her. Wanting to go on big adventures and is just stuck.

Or maybe it's simply about growing up. Throwing yourself into the unknown.

What do I know? Rambling...
