Carbon monoxide

Soon I'll go to sleep

If I don't got my socks on right

They slide right off of my feet

As I walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk

Walk-a, walk, walk-a, walk, walk-a, walk

Carbon monoxide

As I take you home

The first time I get my socks on right

But I don't have a gas mask on

As I walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a,

walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a

Walk you home, Yeah

I'm so cool, I'm so cool, I'm so cool

Walk-a, walk-a, walk, walk-a, walk-a, walk,

Walk, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a, walk-a

Walk you home

Yeah

I'm so cool, I'm so cool, I'm so cool

Come on daddy, come on daddy, come on daddy, come on daddy,

Come on daddy, come on daddy, come on daddy, come on daddy

Carbon monoxide

Soon we'll go to sleep

No one will notice we're gone

Cause we don't have a job to keep

They'll just say that we're being lazy

Sex crazed, sex crazed, hazy

They'll just say we're living our whole life in bed

And we'll be in bed but we'll be oh so very much

Dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a

Dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a

Dead-a, d-dead, yeah

But we're so cool, we're so cool, we're so cool

Dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a

Dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a, dead-a

Dead-a, d-dead

Dead

But we're still cool, we're still cool, we're still cool

Come on daddy, come on daddy come on, come on, come on daddy

Come on daddy, come on daddy, come on daddy, come on daddy

Come on daddy, come on daddy, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on

Carbon monoxide, carbon monoxide.

Interpretation: I sense this song is more about suffocating relationships than it is about actual dying, but it could be about both. Every time I hear it I remember a relationship from when I was young, cool, lazy, sex crazed and hazy. Our apartment even had an ancient gas stove, though nothing bad ever happened in that sense.

Yesterday, I heard an interesting Podcast about Regina Spektor and this song. They interpreted it as a song about prostitution, which I can totally follow:

The walka-walka-walka part may be the search for the next "client", the walk you home part is self explanatory in this context ;-)

"Come on daddy" may be something she says to the clients - I have to think of How I Met your Mother's Barney saying" Whose your Daddy?" in this context.

"No one will notice we're gone

Cause we don't have a job to keep

They'll just say that we're being lazy

Sex crazed, sex crazed, hazy"

Prostitution isn't a legal job, so the society doesn't see the work they have to do, but they notice that they are "sex crazed"."They'll just say we're living our whole life in bed

And we'll be in bed but we'll be oh so very much"

underlines this argument.

The "dead-a" part may be about the inner feelings of the girls: They feel dead inside and tired which could be a parallel to the "Carbon Monoxide".

Plus, the Albums name is "Soviet Kitch", and isn't russian prostitution a big problem? ( at least it is in Germany!)

Ps: Please excuse my mistakes, my english is kinda "rusted" Frowner

^^your english is great! I didn't notice any mistakes.

That's interesting about the prostitution. Personally, i've never even tried to read very deeply into the meaning/intention of this song. Prostitution puts a unique spin on it--i don't think it's safe to say that's comprehensive, but that's just because it doesn't feel like a song with a comprehensive meaning. Smiler

I love this song, to me it reminds me of my teenager times, when I'd spent hours everyday in bed with my girlfriend. Life seemed a paradise then, a constant paradise. And I think we both felt on top of the world... We were students, hadn't jobs to keep, felt the coolest in the world, like we were living the dream that everyone wanted to live. No one would notice if we were gone (died) because we were so much into one another, it's really like the rest of the world was part of the landscape...

The "come on daddy"... that was the whole of the day... because I mean, we lived to be with each other, to kiss and so on... even when we were in classes or doing homework we'd be thinking of the moment when we'd be together again...

"Carbon monoxide" because, as beautiful as it was, it's a kind of dying to the world. I don't know if it's good or bad, but it's a life that, doesn't really produce anything except a lot of pleasurable love and sensations. So I guess, from the point of view of someone who actually wants to succeed in society, it would be a bad thing. A kind of carbon monoxide (poison that doesn't feel like poison, only makes you sleepy / inattentive.) And, also, if you're not rich, it'll probably stop working when you have to start paying the bills. But I guess the strongest interpretation is that it kills you to everything and everybody else, because the only thing in the world is that person, that room, that bed, that love, that immense, gorgeous, gleeful love dancing in our eyes.
