The Mustard Musketeers

Recommended Posts

written for Bear Spektor in the late 90's...

the mustard musketeers

traveled the world calming the fears

of the ladies in waiting

'twas a glorious time

swords and swoons and magic harpoons

and wild horseback riding

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

the mustard musketeers

huffed and puffed 'til they puffed away

everyone's sorrows

and then they rode away

into directionless dust and no one could

say where they'd end up tomorrow

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

the time went by, and they got older

skies got hotter and days got colder

it's paper or plastic, or paper or plastic or,

paper or plastic or, paper or plastic

so the mustard musketeers

scaled their last castle wall

and went in undercover

one went in dressed like a priest,

one went in as a gardener

and one went in as a flower

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey!

mm-ppapa, mm-papa, mm-ppapa hey!

mm-aa-aa, mm-aaaa, mm-aa-aa hey!

mm-aa-aa, mm-aaaa, mm-aa-aa hey!

thoughts? is it "just" a fairytale, or is there anything beneath the surface?

i wrote a (terrible) short story based on this song! i think it's three kids who grew up together, nicknamed the mustard musketeers in the song, then they get older, have summer jobs and they generally become too "grown-up" and busy to keep playing. Not on purpose, just because life happens that way sometimes. Then one day they meet up for a final play date, a goodbye to their childhood adventures!

that's how i've always heard it, probably influenced by others' discussion of it lol

I think (also based on what others have said) that the end is them entering adulthood. The game never ends really... "One went in dressed like a priest" I think means he became a priest. The flower might be that one of them died young. Then the gardener could be an actual gardener or like a gravediggerrrrr... They went in under cover and became adults. 'cause they're really musketeers. But no one knows about it now.

maybe the priest was at the funeral for the third musketeer (the flower) being planted by the gardener (gravedigger)? "we keep on burying our dead, but they won't grow."

How do you guys get "flower"? Confused I always thought it was "lawyer"...

Anyways, I think this song is about growing up. When you're little, you play around with your friends and use your imaginations, pretending to be knights or musketeers. Then, when you get older, you no longer use your imagination and aren't as optimistic ("Skies got higher and days got colder"), and concern yourself with small, unimportant stuff ("It's paper or plastic, paper or plastic..."). Then, you become an adult and get a job, like a priest or gardener or lawyer (not a flower, you silly people Big Grin). But it's all just a disguise. Underneath you're still the same person, and some part of you wishes you could go back in time and become a musketeer again.
