New music we should all hear

I love that song. The Sea Sew album has a great live version, which I think was recorded for a Record Store Day. (All the great singers do Record Store Day!)

Ohmygod ohmygod. Dear Lisa Hannigan, please give me my heart back. I know it was you that stole it.

Lisa Hannigan - "Lille"

Lisa Hannigan - "Playground Love" (Air)

What's most interesting to me are her mouth muscles. She has an interesting way to speak and I love how she smiles at the end because she's so satisfied by the music.

another singer I discovered:

Soap&Skin - Sleep

(fan music video w/ lyrics)

Anja Plaschg/Soap&Skin is one or two years older than me. Makes me feel worthless. I love it.

She's very Regina. If you like the pianist/songwriter/song-siren combo.

Well kids, it's Friday, Friday. You know what that means...

"Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday. Today i-is Friday, Friday. Tomorrow is Saturday. And Sunday comes after...wards. I don’t want this weekend to end. Gotta get down on Friday. Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend. Friday, Friday. Gettin’ down on Friday. Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend. We-we-we so excited. We so excited."

Aah, the post-modernist lyrical genius that is RB, Rebecca Black. Bieber Fever is passé; Black Plague is the craze. Such advanced satire of the modern state of corporate music with empty lyrics and lipsticked products. It's Friday, Friday, babby. Partyin' partyin' Fun, fun, fun, fun. Yeah!

To be fair, she didn't write the song, and her mom did raise concerns about the trite songwriting but that's part of the problem. (See DailyBeast interview: )

I got no respect for musicians who don't write their material, which is why I love Lily Allen and Lady Gaga but hate Miley Cyrus. The songwriting (and personality) of Katy Perry is so awful that I hate her as well and hope she jumps off a bridge. "Do you ever feel like a plastic bag, / drifting through the wind / wanting to start again?" WTF does that mean?!

Now for some thoughts on the 'Friday' single.

If I didn't know English, this might be passably good. The chorus reminds me of the chorus in "Little Secrets" by Passion Pit. It's Friday, Friday. Higher and higher and higher.

I think this is backlash against how baldly terrible and formulaic popular music is nowadays. Even music producers and musicians agree that music (not necessarily all music, just mainstream music) is not good. I mean, seriously... the chorus and the rap break is so inane, but people actually listen to this kind of repetitive music crap in the form of Black-Eyed Peas.

I would have never bothered to listen to the song if it wasn't for the mass internet haterade. It currently has 44.8 million views on Youtube, after being uploaded for only two weeks so far. It has a likability ratio of 74,557 likes to 632,125 dislikes, so 89.4% dislike the song and I'll let you decide what that means for the remaining 10.6%.

I didn't bother to listen to the song until I saw this video - It's the awkward dancing girl in pink from the 'Friday' music video:

I love the authenticity in her response. "I have a dentist's appointment next week... I think." "Yes, I will in fact marry all of you. Each and every one of you." Cute kid.

This is so good:

Birdy - Skinny Love (Bon Iver cover)

[Official Video]

Woah, she's 14!!

She broke the Top 40 Singles Chart in the UK at the age of 14! Her cover of Bon Iver's "Skinny Love" reached 25 on the British charts. I didn't realize she was so young.

another very talented young girl I discovered earlier but made no mention:

"Just Imagine" - a lovely tribute to The Beatles, written and performed by Carly Paige, a 12-year-old girl from Phoenix, AZ

Dear Carly, thank you. I was just blown away by your clever song-writing and singing and minimalistic acoustic strumming (reminiscent of John Lennon's style in his post-Beatles solo career) on your Beatles tribute, 'Just Imagine'. You make me believe in the world again. May you shine on, like the moon, the stars, and the sun. You've got a golden heart, a beautiful soul, and the voice of verity and justice and goodness. You inspire me. Thank you.

Just imagine peace and love and understanding, and everyone will believe, indeed. We need to sell peace like soap, hope like dope, and love like bags. May we come together and realize the dream of Socrates, Anne Frank, Sophie Scholl, Eleanor Roosevelt, Gandhi, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, Rachel Corrie, John Lennon, and you. =) We may be dreamers and idealists and working-class empowered people, but we're not the only ones. I would just like to send all of my love and thanks to you for your inspiring gift of music.
